"Images of America" Art Project

University Town Center is proud to premier its Images of America collection by renowned artist, Phillip Ratner. This artistic presentation, depicting important moments in the history of the United States, is the first piece in a comprehensive exhibit about this great nation. Mr. Ratner’s metal sculpture, 15 feet tall with 40 painted aluminum panels, tells the story of the individuals, the principles, and the events that helped shape America’s founding and development.

In addition, in an area of the development named Document Garden, each of nine free-standing aluminum structures is imprinted with replicas of two treasured historic documents. Document Garden’s visitors of all ages learn about the wisdom of our leaders, such as Thomas Jefferson, who was responsible for the Louisiana Purchase, and Lewis and Clark, who led the Corps of Discovery across uncharted land, from Missouri to the Pacific Ocean and back; contemplate the genius of Thomas Alva Edison and other inventors, whose ingenuity daily transforms the quality of life for people around the world; feel proud of Thurgood Marshall, who argued successfully before the Supreme Court to eradicate segregation in our schools, and feel inspired by the courage of the children who entered newly desegregated schools despite the threat of violence.

As you stroll along University Town Center’s grounds, you notice eight delightful terrapins, designed by Phillip Ratner and painted by local students, for your enjoyment.

In addition to this venue, Mr. Ratner’s art may be enjoyed at the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Supreme Court, as well as in his museums in Bethesda, Maryland, and Safed, Israel.

The art on the Images of America Terrapins was designed and painted by art students at the following Prince George’s County Schools:
